Why Do I Need a Spring Drain Cleaning?

It’s spring and the weather is warming up, trees and plants blooming, and rain falling. Drains take a beating in the spring and to top it off, your plumbing is susceptible to clogs from normal activities like washing dishes and clothes, showering, and using the toilet. Spring is not just a time to enjoy the outdoors, but to perform a thorough drain cleaning to prevent a variety of plumbing problems.

Signs a Spring Drain Cleaning Is Needed Now

When it comes to cleaning your drains, sooner is better than later. Schedule service with Village Plumbing ASAP if you notice these signs of drain trouble:

  • Slow Draining: If your kitchen or bathroom sinks are draining slowly, food particles, soap, hair, and other types of buildup may be restricting flow within pipes. An issue with tub drainage is cause for concern too. We can employ the latest techniques, including water jetting, to clean out drains.
  • Low/No Water Pressure: Buildup in the showerhead or interior pipes can reduce water pressure due to a limited amount of space for water to flow. Water pressure issues can be caused by water heater problems as well.
  • Toilet Flushing Trouble: If you have trouble flushing, the cause can be within your drains. Other possibilities include broken lift chains or damaged flappers. Call if your toilet doesn’t flush, drain, or have a low water level.

Trouble May Be Brewing

A spring drain cleaning should be scheduled because a lot of plumbing issues start without you even knowing it. In fact, many if not most plumbing problems start small. Major failures can therefore be prevented.

A good place to start is to clean the kitchen sink. All you need is mild soap and a sponge for daily cleaning and for a more thorough rinsing, sprinkle baking soda around the sink and rinse it; then soak paper towels in vinegar and line the sink with them. After 20 minutes, throw away the towels and rinse again. If handles and hard-to-reach areas are coated, scrub them gently with a toothbrush.

A similar process can be used to clean the garbage disposal. Start with putting ½ cup of baking soda in, then 1 cup of vinegar. Pour heated, not boiling, water down the disposal and then fill it with two cups of ice. After pouring a cup of salt over the ice, run cold water and turn the disposal on. Then cut a lemon in half and add each half, one at a time, to the disposal to clear any grime and remove odors.

Other Drain Cleaning Tips for Spring

A spring cleaning should include the following tasks as well:

  • Remove leaves and debris from gutters and downspouts.
  • Remove mineral buildup from faucets and shower heads.
  • Schedule a professional water heater flush and inspection.
  • Perform a sump pump test to ensure it can handle an influx of rain.
  • Check for damage or leaks around faucets and pipes.

For stubborn drain clogs, you can try using a plunger or drain snake, but be careful to avoid any plumbing damage.

How Village Plumbing Can Help

We know how important drain cleaning is, as we often see what happens when plumbing isn’t properly maintained. Our trained technicians use a variety of techniques to clean drains and maintain plumbing systems. We’re equipped to provide camera inspection by inserting a video system attached to a long, flexible cable. It lets us see pipes from the inside and find the precise location of clogs.

Water jetting can be used to break down clogs and flush them away, as well as provide preventative maintenance by scouring pipes clean from within. If necessary, we will repair or replace pipes, drains, or sewer lines to get your plumbing running again. Sometimes the job requires more than a drain cleaning, but you can count on us to do whatever it takes.

  1. I never knew that your water pressure can be reduced if there is a build-up in your pipes. My husband and I have noticed how our water pressure has been getting worse over the past couple of weeks, so we were wondering what could be causing it to happen. We’ll have to look into hiring a plumber to come and clean our drains for us as soon as possible!
