Maintaining Your Tankless Water Heater

Tankless water heaters are technologically advanced plumbing devices that deliver an endless supply of hot water. They can save save energy compared to traditional tank-style water heaters by heating water only when it’s needed. Because of their complexity, tankless water heaters require regular maintenance to ensure proper operation and maintain long term reliability.

Removing Limescale From The Tankless Water Heater

Like most plumbing devices tankless water heaters will accumulate mineral deposits, particularly inside the tank’s heating chamber. Mineral build up can reduce the efficiency of the unit and increase the time it takes to heat water. Regularly flushing the unit, once a year is usually sufficient, will remove the accumulated limescale deposits. The steps involved will vary by manufacturer, but the procedure usually involves attaching a hose and flushing the tank with vinegar. See you owner’s manual for details, or call Village Plumbing for service.

Cleaning the Water Heater Screen Filter

Another important tankless water heater maintenance routine involves cleaning the in-line screen filter to remove debris. First, turn off the incoming water supply. Then locate the inlet attachment on the cabinet. Unscrew the plug to remove the filter. Rinse the filter off and reinstall it on the unit. Always read the owner’s manual before attempting any service.
